Federal government owned Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike ( MOUAU ) Abia state has again decried admission quota allocated to it by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) stating it as inadequate when compared with the teeming population of candidates seeking admission into it.

A total of 5,452 were approved for its undergraduates programme for the 2025/2026 academic session, in addition to another 200 for Continuing Education.

The 6th Vice Chancellor professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe decried the low admission number allocation to it during the university’s 32nd matriculation ceremony held at the weekend, which would be the last to be presided over by him, as he begins to conclude his tenure in office in March, 2026.

Members of the University Senate and Congregation in their large numbers were in attendance in solidarity with him.

VC Ofo Iwe expressed the hope that the 2025/2026 admission figure will continue to be increased in the succeeding years following the admission of students into new programmes, namely; Mechatronics, Artificial Intelligence, and the relisted programs in the College of Management Sciences.

He challenged and counseled the matriculated students, after they were administered the Matriculation oath, to make most use of the opportunities that the 33 years old MOUAU offers, stressing that the university has core values that every staff and student should adopt on day-to-day basis.

According to the VC, ” the pillars of the university are built upon values such as integrity, respect, and a commitment to excellence. It is not just about acquiring knowledge, it is about honing the skills and values that will make them responsible citizens and contributors to society development”.
