Across the world, nations that prioritize education invest first in their teachers. Without skilled, motivated, and well-equipped teachers, even the most ambitious reforms collapse.
Consequently the Abia State governor , Dr. Alex Otti, OFR has taken a bold step that redefines this reality.
Recently the Governor graciously employed the services of 5394 new teachers into the civil service of the State, making it in the history of Abia State, the first time such number of teachers were recruited to contribute their quote towards the advancement and development of the state education
Notably during one of his Media parleys tagged Governor Otti Speaks to Abians, Governor directed that the newly employed 5,394 teachers in the State should not be posted to areas where their productivity would not be negatively affected, cautioning that postings should not be used as a punitive measure against any worker in the state.
Under this initiative, the State Government recently organized a two day orientation training program and a 12 Day intensive Capacity Building Training for the newly recruited 5,349 teachers across Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary school levels aimed at familiarizing them with the transformation agenda of the governor Otti led administration’s in the education sector as well as the task before them.
The trainings being coordinated by the Education Reform Implementation Team (ERIT) was also aimed at strengthening their capabilities and knowledge for effective teaching and service delivery so that they will conform with the 21st century demands
The training is not generic but it is carefully designed to address the unique demands of each learning stage
Infact the Early Childhood Education focused on bilingual instruction (Igbo and English), outdoor learning, mathematical thinking, citizenship, creative arts, and trauma-informed care while Primary Schools modules focused on classroom management, inclusive education, child protection, integration of educational technology, and professional ethics.
In the same vein Junior Secondary Schools focused on inquiry-based learning, adolescent leadership, gender empowerment, peer mentoring, and navigating controversial issues while that of Senior Secondary Schools also focused on project-based learning, curriculum alignment, STEAM integration, civic education, and modern assessment methods, the Career and Technical Education: strategies for career-focused pedagogy, early warning systems for at-risk students, and personality-driven career planning.
Also another areas focused on ICT and Emerging Fields: digital literacy, robotics, artificial intelligence, and green energy integration.
No doubt by equipping teachers with such wide-ranging skills, Abia is preparing them not just to teach, but to lead a generation into the realities of the 21st century.
This initiative could not have come at a better time. Nigeria’s National Policy on Education has just been reformed, emphasizing a competency-based, outcome-driven curriculum structured around a spiral-cyclical model
Indeed AbiaFIRST is already delivering on this vision by ensuring teachers are grounded in digital literacy, AI, robotics, and other new techniques in teaching skills.
At the closing ceremony of the 12 Day intensive Capacity Building Training Programe, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Elder Goodluck Ubochi charged the participants to replicate all they were thought to ensure Abia students acquire sound education.
Elder Goodluck Ubochi disclosed that the training program in conjunction with the State Government and Education Reform and Innovation Team (ERIT) was designed to properly equip the newly recruited teachers with the modern techniques, skills, ethical standards and the right mindset for effective service delivery.
He reminded the teachers that the training marks a significant beginning of their continuous growth towards advancing teaching profession and enjoined them to be committed to the education transformational initiative of the Governor Dr Alex Otti as well as discharge their duties diligently and pursuit excellence as agents of transformation in the education Sector.
To this end newly recruited teachers are expected to give their best having gone through various rigorous trainings and capacity building workshop, it is expected that they have been equipped to hit the ground running by ensuring Abia Pupils and Students acquire sound and good moral education.
They are also expected to reciprocate the kind gesture of the Governor to them by being honest, shun all forms of misconducts corruption and take their duties seriously.
Again Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education,SEMB, ASUBEB and other Stakeholders in the education sector should time to time conduct a comprehensive evaluation assessment of the teachers to ensure it conforms with global best standards.,
It is worthy to note that the recruitment of 5349 teachers by the State Government, prompt payment of salary, construction and retrofitting of schools currently ongoing across the State which the State Government has embarked upon under the Leadership of the Governor Otti, the new Coast is clear for rapid development and growth of Education sector in the State.
