The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria ( MDCN ) has inducted the 83 third batch of medical doctors trained by the 13 years old Gregory University Uturu in Abia state bringing the total it has so far trained/ in three batches to 154.
The 154 which comprised 97 females and 57 males, show that the number of females progressively increased, such that while 14, 26 and 52 females were trained/inducted in 2023, 2024 and 2025 respectively, the males comprising 7, 19 and 31 were trained/inducted in the same 2023, 2024 and 2025 respectively.
The 26 first batch graduated/inducted in 2023 comprised 19 females and 7 ( seven ) males , the second batch of 45 inducted in 2024 comprised 26 females and 19 males, while the latest 2025 third batch of 83, comprised 52 females and 31 males.
The GUU Chancellor, Mr Ikechukwu Gregory Ibe Jnr, during the induction ceremony held at Dr Goodluck Jonathan auditorium, announced on behalf of the Founder’s family, a two million naira cash reward to the overall best graduate Dr Chidera Celine Ugoh who, additionally garnered other cash prizes from the university and gifts from some members of the public.
The GUU Founder, professor Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe Snr, through the Deputy Vice Chancellor ( Administration ), professor Uwaoma Kalu Uche , recalled nostalgically that his twin children are medical practitioners, one of whom is a professor, disclosing that his motivation for establishing GUU, was his vision for human empowerment particularly in medicine adding that the induction of this third batch of the 83 medical graduates, is a reflection of his commitment to academic excellence.
In their separate remarks, the Pro- Chancellor, Professor Augustine Uwakwe, and Vice Chancellor Professor Celestina Njoku said that the significant milestones achieved by the GUU trained Medical doctors and the Students are eloquent testimonies of hardwork, rigorous study and resilience that would enable them achieve successes in their next endeavours.
Noting that with more medical training institutions emerging rapidly across the Nigeria, who are turning out medical professionals in large numbers, there is urgent need to expand the medical institutions and facilities therein, to engage/employ the yearly emerging certified and registered professionals.
While administering the statutory medical doctors’ Oaths on the 83 graduating doctors , the MDCN Registrar, Dr Fatima Kyari, who was represented by the Head of the Registration Department, Dr Mandaka Tijjani told the Inductees that knowledge of skills, integrity, empathy, respect for senior colleagues among others, are key demands in the practice of the profession.
” You must abide by the practice ethics, avoid unwholesome conducts , respect your professional senior Medical Doctors, know when to refer matters to your seniors, fulfil your obligations to the Medical profession timely, including humility to patients, among others, warning that sanctions await defaulters.
He also urged them to advance their just earned first medical degrees in line with the global trend that tends towards specialization, against general practice
The Provost of the GUU Medical School, Professor Shadrach Offiah urged the inducted new doctors to maintain the curiosity that has driven them throughout their education as they transition from being students to practitioners.
He said ” Be agents of change in any field of medicine you choose. The field of medicine is ever-evolving new technologies, treatments, and understanding of human health are emerging regularly hence, your commitment to continuous learning will not only enhance your practice but also improve the lives of your patients”.
The best/over all graduating medical doctor Dr. Chidera Celine Ugoh, in her valedictory speech, said she was overwhelmed with joy and awe by the miracle of her surviving the course, expressing her appreciation to the GUU, her teachers, her mother, among many others.
She said, ” my journey through medical school was far from being smooth. There were days I studied with an empty stomach, and there were nights I wanted to just give up. I struggled with fear, with lack , with self-doubt. Yet , through these storms , God reached for me. And through it all, one woman, my mother, Presca Ekeh, never let go of my hand”.
