How GWIHR ( Women Group ) commemorated the 2024 WORLD SEXUAL HEALTH DAY (WSHD)

Greater Women Initiative for Health and Right ( GWIHR ) a non governmental organization ( NGO ) on Wednesday 4th, September, joined the global community to commemorate the 2024 World Sexual Health Day (WSHD).

The theme of this year’s day is
” Positive Relationships” .

GWIHR used the Theme to raise and widen the awareness and importance of sexual health noting that Sexual Health is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being and quality of life.

GWIHR opined that fostering positive and healthy relationships is essential for everyone, regardless of their background, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and job choice.

” This year, GWIHR emphasized the critical need for diverse women and girls, including adolescent girls and Young Women, Sex Workers, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transgenders, and Queer ( LBTQ ) women, women and girls with disabilities and women and girls living with HIV to have access to quality sexual health services.

While GWIHR during the commemoration, amplified voices and experiences of these marginalized groups in sexual health programming, GWIHR’s Program Team held interviews with key stakeholders in health institutions, namely; Rivers State Ministry of Health (RSMOH), Rivers State Primary HealthCare Management Board (RSPHCMB), and Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP).

GWIHR’s Program Team
discussion with RSMOH was with regard to their 2025 Strategic Health Development Plan which is considered a crucial plan that would be responsive to the sexual health needs of diverse sexual minorities in Rivers State.

” During their conversations with RSPHCMB, GWIHR addressed the availability and accessibility of sexual health services at the grassroots level.

” They also pushed for the allocation of equity funds targeted at women and girls living with HIV, including sex workers, to alleviate financial barriers and improve their access to sexual and health services at RIVCHPP.

According to GWIHR, these interviews which have also been documented and released, are aimed to shine a light on the real-world impact of positive relationships on sexual health and the urgent need to address stigma and barriers to care.

Speaking on the day’s event, the GWIHR Executive Director, Mrs. Josephine Aseme told Nigeriareports.ng that “by working together, we can reduce stigma, raise awareness, and improve access to essential sexual health resources for everyone.

” Together, we can create a world where sexual health is recognized as a vital human right, and everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilling life” .
